May 2014: Telangana has split from Andhra Pradesh to become the newest -- 29th -- State of India on 2nd June 2014 with Hyderabad as the shared capital. K. Chandrashekhar Rao (TRS party) has become Telangana's Chief Minister. As the new state is born, we make a refreshed and updated list of all the states, their capital cities and their chief ministers.
India comprises 29 States and seven Union Territories. A Chief Minister is an elected head of the local government in a State for a five-year term and can serve unlimited number of terms.
